Description:

Rome, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A gorgeous crescent shaped earring made of 45% gold (equivalent to 10K+) with intricate granulated details. The body is hollow, a sheet of gold shaped to a crescent or "boat" shape with applied wire loops along the bottom to hold small dangling links and discs. The upward pointing ends of the body support an arching clasp that is held by a hinge on one tip and a pin catch on the opposite tip. This earring is stunning with many symmetrically arranged granules on the body. This piece may have belonged to an elite Roman woman. Roman women - especially of the upper classes - had their ears pierced and wore one set of earrings. Jewelry was particularly important to women in Roman society because it was legally their own property. Size: 1.75" L x .8" W (4.4 cm x 2 cm); quality of gold 45% (equivalent to 10K+) ; total weight: 3.7 grams

Provenance: ex-estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA acquired before 2000
