Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 3rd to 4th century CE. A lovely matching pair of 87% gold (equivalent to 20K+) earrings with modern gold plated sterling ear hooks to make wearable. The earrings are comprised of a single wire shaped into a hoop with slightly concave hemispheric shields applied to the front. Above the hemispheres the wire tapers and twists around itself, formally this area was the hook for the earlobe. These dainty earrings are wearable and would make an elegant addition to any jewelry collection. Size: .5" W (1.3 cm); quality of gold: 87% (equivalent to 20K+); total weight of both: 1.8 grams

Roman women - especially of the upper classes - had their ears pierced and wore one set of earrings. Jewelry was particularly important to women in Roman society because it was legally their own property, independent of their husband's wealth, and they could use it as they saw fit.
