Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 3rd to 4th century CE. A beautiful example of a broad pitcher that is free-blown from translucent glass of a subtle blue-green hue. The spherical body has a concave base and was rolled across a patterned mold while the body was being formed to create 22 shallow vertical ribs that taper upwards with the rounded shoulder. The cylindrical neck bears a single, tiered trail of applied glass as well as a rolled and slightly flared lip, and a semicircular trail handle is pulled between the rim and upper shoulder. Brilliant layers of silvery and rainbow-hued iridescence have formed across the vessel and elegantly complement its pale aqua color. Size: 3.375" W x 4.9" H (8.6 cm x 12.4 cm)

Provenance: private Dere collection, East Coast, USA assembled between 1970 and 2000
