Roman, Imperial Period to Early Medieval period, ca. 3rd to 10th century CE. An iron ballista spike projectile with a twisted wrought iron shaft and open socket for hafting. The ballista is an ancient missile launcher used extensively from early Greek warfare into the early medieval period, which threw projectiles tipped with iron bolts such as this. Bolts were loaded into a sliding device atop a stand which was winched back for firing using a ratchet device. Size: 6.125" L x 0.5" W (15.6 cm x 1.3 cm)
