Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. A wonderful carnelian intaglio featuring the head of a male youth facing left set into a modern, high-quality - 92.4% - gold ring to be wearable. Boasting a translucent hue of vermillion, the ovoid gem features a beardless male with round cheeks and a shaggy mop of hair crowned by a headband. The lustrous gold ring broadens to a thick shoulder, into which the intaglio is set. A beautiful, wearable piece of ancient history! Size (exterior of ring): 0.9" W (2.3 cm); (intaglio): 0.4" L x 0.3" W (1 cm x 0.8 cm); US ring size: 6.75; gold quality: 92.4% (equivalent to over 22 karats); weight: 12.5 grams
