Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE; Europe, ca. 20th century CE. An attractive Roman carnelian intaglio of a nude helmeted figure before an altar, all set in a modern gilt brass ring to be wearable. Boasting a vibrant shade of translucent red, the ovoid gem shows the figure striding right with a pile of spears behind him and a sword with a helmet before him, suggesting he may be intended as Mars (Greek Ares) the Roman god of war. The intaglio is set in a raised bezel and a bifurcated band that splits at each shoulder. Size (of intaglio): 0.6" L x 0.4" W (1.5 cm x 1 cm); of ring: 1" L x 0.8" W (2.5 cm x 2 cm); US ring size: 8.25; gilding: 15.3%
