Roman, late Republic to early Imperial Period, ca. 1st century BCE to 1st century CE; Western Europe, probably England or France, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. An attractive carnelian intaglio of ovoid form that is set within the form-fitting bezel of a modern 86.9% gold ring. The top of the carnelian surface is incised with a left-facing image of Mars (Greek Ares), the god of war, as he sits in a relaxed pose while writing along the exterior surface of his convex shield with a stylus. Size (intaglio): 0.52" L x 0.45" W x 0.11" H (1.3 cm x 1.1 cm x 0.3 cm); (ring setting): 0.59" L x 0.87" W x 0.86" H (1.5 cm x 2.2 cm x 2.2 cm); gold quality: 86.9% (equivalent to 20K+); weight: 5.7 grams; US ring size: 7.5

  • Condition: Wearable as shown and constructed in modern times. Carnelian intaglio is ancient; ring setting is modern. Minor abrasions along top of intaglio commensurate with age, otherwise intact and excellent. Great preservation to finer details on intaglio.
