Description:

Roman, Imperial period, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE; Europe, Neoclassical period, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A beautiful Roman carnelian intaglio of the Roman god Jupiter (Greek Zeus) holding Victoria (Greek Nike), all mounted in a Neoclassical ring of over 22 karats to be wearable. Boasting a vibrant hue of scarlet, the raised gem shows the king of the gods seated in a throne and facing left as he holds the goddess Victoria in the palm of his hand and an eagle perches at his feet. Size (of intaglio): 0.5" L x 0.3" W (1.3 cm x 0.8 cm); of ring: 1.1" L x 0.9" W (2.8 cm x 2.3 cm); US ring size: 6; gold quality: 94.09% (over 22 karats); weight: 5.3 grams

Victoria, the deified personification of victory, was connected to Jupiter in his role as bestower of military victory. Jupiter, as a sovereign god, was considered as having the power to conquer anyone and anything in a supernatural way; his contribution to military victory was different from that of Mars (god of military valor). Victoria appears first on the reverse of coins representing Venus (driving the quadriga of Jupiter, with her head crowned and with a palm in her hand) during the first Punic War. Sometimes, she is represented walking and carrying a trophy.
