Roman, Imperial period, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE; Europe, Neoclassical period, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A gorgeous carnelian intaglio depicting a Capricorn or sea goat - an animal with the upper body of a goat and the lower body of a fish - set in a Neoclassical gold ring. Carved into a translucent scarlet-hued stone, the mythical goat is surrounded by symbols of good fortune or the goddess Fortuna, such as a cornucopia, a rudder, and a globe. Capricorn, Jupiter's helper, ascended to the sky, could also be felt as a positive and apotropaic creature, from which help could be obtained for every-day life for the wearer of this ring. Size of intaglio: 0.4" L x 0.3" W (1 cm x 0.8 cm); of ring: 0.8" L x 0.8" W (2 cm x 2 cm); US ring size: 7.25; gold quality: 67.7% (equivalent to over 16 karats; weight: 4.3 grams

  • Condition: Ancient intaglio set in a Neoclassical ring to be wearable. A few very light scratches to carnelian intaglio, but none affecting imagery, which is still very clear. Ring and intaglio are intact, excellent, and wearable with impressive preservation of detail on intaglio.
