Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. A cast bronze miniature statue of a god, perhaps Zeus, depicted as an older man with a powerfully-built chest. He sits draped with a toga that is wrapped around his waist and legs, atop a square pedestal. Comes with custom wood stand. Size: 0.8" L x 1.45" W x 2.45" H (2 cm x 3.7 cm x 6.2 cm); on stand, 2.05" W x 4.3" H (5.2 cm x 10.9 cm).

Roman bronze miniatures may have been copies of larger statues in civic spaces, kept at a home shrine or carried by an individual. The wear on this piece suggests that it was a treasured item, often touched.

  • Condition: Both arms are lost at elbow. Expected age wear has smoothed some of the features, but the shape is clear. Back of wood stand has a loss, but it still stands on its own.
