Description:

Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A charming cast bronze oil lamp with a looped, overhanging handle. Attached to the handle as a finial is the face of what appears to be a youthful man, with smooth features and a full head of wavy hair - perhaps intended to be a mask or representation of a mythical figure, or simply an idealized handsome man. The body of the lamp is long, with a broad, flared spout, and a deep border around its mouth. It stands on a diminutive, round foot and has a cuboid-shaped hole on its underside for insertion into a stand. A simple convex lid is attached to the body with a folded-over hinge. Size: 5" W x 3" H (12.7 cm x 7.6 cm)
