Description:

Roman, early Imperial Period, ca. 1st century CE. A gorgeous cast and blown unguentarium comprised of canes of near-opaque cobalt blue and opaque white glass. The vessel exhibits a piriform body with a concave bottom, a cylindrical neck, and a flared, in-folded rim. The exterior of the vessel boasts nine thick, raised ribs which imbue it with an opulent presentation. This vessel would have been blown inside a solid mold since, based on the form, it could not have been draped atop the mold upside-down similar to pillar-molded bowls. The exterior also boasts a lustrous fire-polished surface which accentuates the colors of the glass canes. Used to hold small amounts of precious scented oils, this is a stunning example of high-quality Roman craftsmanship! Size: 1.75" W x 3.25" H (4.4 cm x 8.3 cm).
