Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A round, disc-like, cast bronze mirror with a strap handle applied to its back and a long, cylindrical handle that splays into a three-armed branch form where it meets the mirror. One round face is polished and appears to have once been silvered. It would have served as a status symbol for a Roman woman, who could have used it for her daily toilette; mirrors frequently appear in Classical art being held by women, especially brides, and we believe that they were gifts given to young women about to enter into marriage. They were also frequently buried with women. Size: 6.05" W x 9.35" H (15.4 cm x 23.7 cm); 10.65" H (27.1 cm) on included custom stand.
