Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A cast bronze head of a leopard, well-detailed and naturalistic, hollow and with a socket for attachment at the back. The leopard was a symbol of virility in this culture, and the god Bacchus, patron of a highly sexualized mystery cult, is often depicted wearing a leopard skin and / or riding a leopard. This was probably a decorative attachment. Size: 1" W x .625" H (2.5 cm x 1.6 cm); 1.5" H (3.8 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private New York, USA collection; ex Bavaria, Germany, private collection, acquired in the 1960s
