Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE. A bronze ring wrapped in 22K gold sheet with an ovoid bezel containing an onyx intaglio depicting Fortuna. The dark stone contrasts beautifully with the ring, which has an appearance of solidity and strength. The portrait of Fortuna shows the goddess standing, facing slightly right, her himation drawn up around her knees. Fortuna was one of the most common deities worshipped in a domestic context, and she is often depicted, as she is here, with her cornucopia, in order to bring prosperity and luck. Size of intaglio: 0.45" H (1.1 cm); size of ring: 1.25" W (3.2 cm); US ring size: 4.5; total weight: 21.4 grams

Provenance: private Connecticut, USA collection; ex-private collection, North America, 1980s
