Description:

Ancient Art. Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. In incredible condition, this is a cast bronze attachment for a belt or other item of clothing. With fine detail and openwork edges, it depicts the head of a wizened ram. He has large, downward-curved horns, a long beard divided into three parts, a parted forelock, huge ears, and some kind of crested, segmented headdress. By Roman times, the ram was already an ancient symbol of virility and masculinity, and the god Mercury was often accompanied by a ram to symbolize fertility. Size: 1.55" W x 1.95" H (3.9 cm x 5 cm); 4.6" H (11.7 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Orange County, California, USA collection acquired before 2000; previously Arte Primitivo
