Description:

Rome, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE. Finely cast via the lost wax (cire perdue) process, a bronze applique depicting Bacchus (Greek Dionysos or Dionysus) - god of wine, pleasure, ritual madness, ecstasy, and theatre - reclining in a languid pose on a panther skin (take note of the paws beneath Bacchus' body and that fierce wild feline visage beneath his elbow), his himation covering the lower portion of his body, his right arm raised and resting on his laurel crowned head. A stunning example with dark olive green patina. Perforation below lower hip presumably for attachment. Custom stand. Size: 4.125" W x 2.75" H (10.5 cm x 7 cm); 3.375" H (8.6 cm) on included custom stand.

DIONYSOS (or Dionysus) was the great Olympian god of wine, vegetation, pleasure and festivity. He was depicted as either an older bearded god or a pretty effeminate, long-haired youth as we see in this example. His attributes included the thyrsos (a pine-cone tipped staff), drinking cup, a panther or leopard skin, and fruiting vine. He was usually accompanied by a troop of Satyrs and Mainades (female devotees or nymphs).
