Description:

Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. A remarkable lead stock from a Roman anchor featuring a pair of slightly slanted arms and a central, rectangular socketing shaft for the wooden shank, all enveloped in thick layers of sea encrustations - a souvenir from centuries spent on the ocean floor! These anchors were used by the Romans to secure their vessels while anchored in ports or at sea from the 3rd century BCE to the 5th century CE. Throughout history, Roman anchors underwent an evolution in design and size, reflecting advancements in shipbuilding during that era. Typically made of iron or bronze, they featured a distinctive design with a long shank and a T-shaped fluke at the end, providing stability and gripping capability on different types of seabeds. Roman anchors have been discovered in numerous archaeological sites along the Mediterranean coasts and other regions where the Romans had maritime presence.
