Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A fierce amulet, painstakingly carved from cow bone, featuring the head of a man with deepset eyes that stare out at the viewer, a strong nose, deep lines on the forehead, and a wild countenance surrounded by curled beard and hair. A loop at the top of the head allows this pendant to be worn. The man depicted is probably Hercules, who was immensely popular in Roman culture. Size: 0.75" W x 1.1" H (1.9 cm x 2.8 cm); 1.75" H (4.4 cm) on included custom stand.
