Description:

Rome, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE. A beautiful, free-blown glass flask of classic aubergine hues with radiant tones of plum and deep purple, its teardrop-shaped body extending to a tubular neck with a splayed lip and in-folded rim. Adding to its striking aesthetic is the fine trail of white opaque glass that was carefully and evenly wound around the entire body of the vessel from the bottom of the base extending to the neck as well as stunning areas of rainbow iridescence. Custom lucite stand. Size: 1.5" in diameter at widest x 3.25" H (3.8 cm x 8.3 cm); 3.625" H (9.2 cm)

Widespread from the early Imperial period, small glass vessels like this example were mass-produced using the technique of glassblowing; however, they nevertheless show significant variations in shape and color of the glass, making each piece virtually unique. Glassblowing was invented towards the middle of the 1st century BCE in the Syrian-Palestinian region, and eventually spread throughout the Mediterranean basin. This amazing technical innovation transformed the glass industry, because it enabled glassmakers to produce tableware and storage containers in a wider variety - more readily and quickly than ever before. Consequently, glass overtook clay as a raw material for the manufacture of vessels in virtually all arenas of daily life from the late Hellenistic period onward.
