Description:

Ancient Rome, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A breathtaking high karat (20K) gold and round garnet cabochon ring. The shank is comprised of three wires, two spiral, twisted wires with one flat wire between them. The garnet cabochon is of a remarkable, orblike shape, set in a round raised bezel with spiral, twisted upper and lower peripheries. How the shank and set stone meet is exceedingly elegant, with the termini of the shank curled, a trio of granules adorning the top, nicely punctuating each end of the bezel. For a similar example, see Ruseva-Prokoska L. Roman Jewelry. A Collection of National Archaeological Museum-Sofia, Sofia, 1991, cat. #221. Ring size 5.25; Garnet measures .375" in diameter (1 cm); Total Weight: 4.6 grams
