Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. This is a finely cast bronze pendant in the form of a fascinus (or fascinum), a winged phallus that invoked the divine phallus deity. Pliny wrote of such pendants as a "medicus invidiae", a ward against the evil eye. This example is lovingly rendered and as naturalistic as a phallus with wings can be. Hung from its loop for suspension on a modern leather string with a silver clasp. Size: 27" L x 1.1" W x 1.55" H (68.6 cm x 2.8 cm x 3.9 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Private Florida collection
