Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 3rd century CE. An attractive and wearable Roman ring formed from78% gold (equivalent to 18K+) with a sturdy shank and triangular shoulders that flare outwards to create the ovoid bezel. Within the bezel is an opaque, crimson-hued jasper intaglio bearing an image of an eagle as well as two petite additional birds within the engraved face. The Imperial Roman eagle was known as the aquila. The aquila was the symbol of the Roman legion, and, by around 100 BCE, each company of soldiers carried a standard bearing an eagle.
