European, France, ca. 1920s to 1930s. A stunning chess set comprised of 16 finely cast bronze and 16 finely cast white metal pieces. All depict mesmerizingly mysterious figures - Kings wearing long flowing cloaks around their shoulders; Queens wear hooded cloaks that are open in front so as to reveal their breasts and pregnant bellies; Knights wear masks and wield shields; Bishops wear hooded cloaks; Rooks are abstract towering castles rendered as rectangular prisms; and Pawns present with high-collared garments wrapping their torsos. All are rendered in a mesmerizing Rodinesque style boasting remarkable modeling and craftmanship. A very unique chess set accompanied by two felt carry bags, one for each side, with compartments for each piece. Size (Kings): 4.125" H (10.5 cm)
