Description:

Michael Massie (Inuit, Metis, and Scottish, b. 1962). "Nightmares of a Mayugyug" sculpture comprised of stone, alabaster, cedar, and ebony, 2006. Signature, date, and title inscribed on underside of base. An enthralling Inuit janiform sculpture by Michael Massie, "Nightmares of a Mayugyug" invites the viewer to observe the hair-raising iconography from all angles. One side the piece presents a spine-chilling monstrous creature, while the opposing side features an understandably frightened mother and child. All is skillfully carved from a sizeable stone of cool blue-grey hues with dramatic white inclusions, and further embellished with contrasting inlays of alabaster, cedar, and ebony. A delightfully phantasmagorical piece by Michael Massie that masterfully juxtaposes impressively realistic portrayals of the human visages with an unearthly ghoulish visage of the nightmarish creature. Size: 15.875" H x 11.75" W x 9.5" D (40.3 cm x 29.8 cm x 24.1 cm)

About the Artist: "Labrador-based artist Michael Massie (b. 1962) makes work that reflects his mixed Inuit, Métis and Scottish heritage. An incredible silversmith, Massie has achieved international renown for his inventive sculptural works that skillfully combine stone and metal. Both the materials and themes in Massie’s work draw from the artist’s own Indigenous and European heritages, such as his coveted ulu teapot works. Every work is as conceptually complex as it is beautiful as each comes with a unique story informed by personal, communal, and global themes.

Massie found success in 2005 after his first solo exhibition at Spirit Wrestler Gallery in Vancouver. He has been working in sculpture for over 25 years and has achieved artistic acclaim not only within Canada but internationally. Massie’s work has been shown all over the world and sits in many prestigious public and private collections including: the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, the Heard Museum, the Royal Ontario Museum, the National Gallery of Canada, and the YVR Vancouver Airport Collection.."
