Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, late Recuay / early Sican transitional period, ca. 500 CE. A mold-formed pottery vessel with a flat base, a roughly triangular body, and a thick rim which leads in towards a deep interior cavity. The front of the vessel depicts Naylamp (also Naymlap, Nanlap, or Nylamp), the traditional founder of the Lambayeque dynasty who came from the south by sea and colonized the region before he allegedly sprouted wings and flew off into the sunset in a dramatic display of his magical powers. Naylamp has a pair of highly-stylized jaguar heads project from his shoulders, tasseled earrings, and a pronged crown above the minimalist visage. Size: 6.25" W x 4.7" H (15.9 cm x 11.9 cm).
