Pre-Columbian, Zapotec culture, Monte Alban, Mexico, ca. 300 CE. Rare and quite delightful pottery incensario of heavy gray clay. Figural cup with "fierce" jaguar in high relief emerging with mouth open, teeth exposed, claws ready to rip you to shreds. He wears a necklace around his neck indicating he may be a shaman in transformation or in costume. Remains of original white and red pigments. Size: 5" L x 4.25" W x 7.25" H (12.7 cm x 10.8 cm x 18.4 cm)

Provenance: private Southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
