Native American, Northwestern United States, Alaska, Cup'ik / Yup'ik culture, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A superb headdress / forehead mask made from bentwood adorned in feathers with a wooden walrus head at the front held in place by strips of sinew. The walrus tusks are carved from actual walrus tusk ivory and the whiskers are made from feather quills. This headdress / mask was worn with the walrus head protruding from the wearer's brow as ritualistic or dance regalia. Size: 11.5" L x 8" Diameter x 9" H (29.2 cm x 20.3 cm x 22.9 cm)

  • Condition: Some fraying and bending to feathers. Wear and patina to wood and sinew cords - great signs of use and age. Stable pressure fissures on the walrus head and some losses to quill whiskers. Overall excellent condition.
