Description:

Native American, North America, Canada, Kwakiutl (Kwakwaka'wakw) tribe, ca. 1840s to 1860s CE. A fabulous whistle that is hand-carved from cedar wood. The instrument contains a mouthpiece on one end bearing 2 air holes that, when air is forced into each one, created a loud whistling sound at one time. The whistle is bound with twisted string to secure the fragile instrument. A name reading "Charly" is inscribed beneath the museum label. Size (whistle): 7.125" L x 1.75" W x 1" H (18.1 cm x 4.4 cm x 2.5 cm); (display case): 2.4" L x 8.9" W x 10.875" H (6.1 cm x 22.6 cm x 27.6 cm)

  • Condition: Signs of previous repair and old adhesive residue; bound with string to secure repaired areas. Abrasions and darkening to some areas, with small chips around mouthpiece and body, otherwise in great condition. Nice patina throughout. Old inventory label reading "122" from the Cincinnati Museum on obverse.
