Description:

Pre-Columbian, Caribbean area, perhaps Dominican Republic, Taino (Arawak) Indians, ca. 1000 to 1500 CE. A hand-carved wooden stool known as a "duho" with a large, curved body and a projecting zoomorphic head standing atop four bent legs. The "duho" is a stool not meant for sitting upon but rather for standing or crouching over. Examples like this would have been owned by only the most high-status individuals as their influence enabled them to better converse and plead with the gods. An incredibly rare artifact covered in smooth light-brown patina. Size: 11.625" L x 4.75" W x 5.8" H (29.5 cm x 12.1 cm x 14.7 cm).

Provenance: private Southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s

  • Condition: One front leg reattached with light adhesive residue along break line. Small losses to raised end, top, legs, and head, with softening to some finer details, and extensive insect damage. Light earthen deposits and nice brown patina throughout.
