Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Oaxaca, Zapotec, Monte Alban IV, ca. 600 to 900 CE. A hand-built incensario vessel with twin censer cups joined in the center. The front of each cup features the well-modeled head of an elite or a deity with recessed eyes, a prominent nose, huge ear spools, and full lips. A simple headdress with lateral flaps caps the left head, and a braided headband with spherical appliques tops the right head. Dozens of fine vertical striations create an abraded yet smooth exterior texture. Size: 5.875" W x 3.5" H (14.9 cm x 8.9 cm).

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s

  • Condition: Vessels repaired from multiple large pieces and then reattached to one another, with small losses and light adhesive residue along break lines. Minor nicks to heads, rims, bodies, and bases, with softening to some finer details, and light abrasions throughout. Nice earthen deposits.
