Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Mexico, Aztec, ca. 1300 to 1500 CE. A wonderful stuccoed earthenware effigy bowl with a bird's neck in high relief and head delineated in the round on one end, wings rendered with a feathered border in relief and each wing containing a stylized pair of birds delineated in low relief within. The vessel sits upon three rounded, slit rattle legs. In addition to having the ability to create a percussive sound, the iconography is highly symbolic - in the Pre-Columbian world, birds were understood as sky animals that had the power to serve as messengers between humankind and their deities. A very rare example! Size: 9" W from bird head to opposite end of bowl x 4.75" H (22.9 cm x 12.1 cm)

Provenance: private Southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s

  • Condition: Repaired from multiple pieces, but well done. Normal surface wear commensurate with age. Some losses to white stucco as shown. Still a marvelous example. Legs still contain rattles and make a wonderful percussive sound!
