Description:

Pre-Columbian, Northern Peru, Lambayeque Valley, Sican/Lambayeque culture, ca. 750 to 1375 CE. A mold-formed and highly-burnished pottery vessel with a lightly-rounded but stable base, a spherical body, a pair of petite snails with spiral shells on the lower shoulder, a tapered cylindrical spout, and a wide strap handle joining spout to shoulder. Seated atop the body and doubling as the neck is a highly-stylized anthropomorphic figure with crossed legs, a red-painted face with bulging eyes, and a striped head band, with two smaller figures, perhaps children, hanging onto outstretched arms. The cream-slipped body is wrapped with a thin spiral of red-orange pigment, and solid swaths of red paint adorn the spout and handle top. Size: 6.3" W x 8.125" H (16 cm x 20.6 cm).
