Description:

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Paracas culture, ca. 500 to 300 BCE. A beautiful bowl formed from a hollow gourd with a slightly concave base, rounded walls, a deep basin, and a thin lip which perhaps at one time held a lid. The vessel is decorated with intricate linear, stepped, and stippled motifs as well as a repeating register of abstract avian figures, perhaps hummingbirds. The birds each have narrow beaks, a singular circular eye, and triangular bodies, with pyro-engraved swaths of dark coloration accentuating the body. Size: 7.5" W x 4.2" H (19 cm x 10.7 cm).

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-private Parcival collection, France
