Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. A nice example of a ceramic pipe used by the Romans to supply clean water. The long pipe features a fitted tab at one end for slotting into the next pipe. Many similar pipes can be seen in the museum at Pafos, Cyprus. Although this pipe is ancient, terracotta pipes are much older - for example, some have been found at the ca. 4000 BCE Temple of Bel at Nippur, Babylonia. Size: 2.25" W x 13.45" H (5.7 cm x 34.2 cm)

Provenance: private J.H. collection, Beaverton, Oregon, USA, acquired in April 2014; ex-Holyland Antiquities, Israel, exported by Dr. Robert Deutsch
