Description:

**Originally Listed At $800**

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A pair of wonderfully-preserved cast bronze roundels, made to be applied decoratively to a chariot, each featuring a striking face of Medusa with wide, staring eyes, a serious facial expression, and a massive head of wavy hair with twin serpent head forms at the top. Medusa was the most famous of the three gorgons, human women with venomous snakes for hair. The concept of the gorgon, a frightening, beast-like, female creature, is at least as old as Homer and continued to be used as a monstrous symbol throughout the Roman period, especially popular as decoration on pottery. Size of largest: 2.05" W x 1.95" H (5.2 cm x 5 cm); 2.45" H (6.2 cm) on included custom stand.
