Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A rare and finely preserved pottery oil lamp that was formed in a mold with a rare gladiator helmet within the tondo. Beneath the planar base is a planta pedis or maker's mark reading L.MADIEC while the neck is decorated with a pair of volute spirals. The gladiator helmet is of the Myrmillo type (also Murmillo, from the Greek "mormylos" meaning "marine fish") with a billowing crest and unusual circular eyeholes more common on Secutor-type gladiator helmets. Protruding from one of the wick spouts is a fragment of the original iron wick. Size: 4.3" L x 2.96" W x 1" H (10.9 cm x 7.5 cm x 2.5 cm)
