Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. A fine cast bronze statue of a beautiful nude woman with her arms raised, probably depicting the goddess Venus (Aphrodite) wearing a crown. She has a wonderfully animated pose, as if she is in the midst of conversation. Size: 0.9" W x 3.55" H (2.3 cm x 9 cm)

Small bronze statues such as this one would have been common in non-elite households and were probably copies of larger, more famous pieces that were mass produced in workshops for the domestic market. The lead base may have been added at a later date (still in the Roman period) or may be original - it seems to cover some of the features of the statue.
