Description:

Pre-Columbian, from ancient Ecuador, ca. 300 BCE - 300 CE. Measures approximately 2-3/4"W x ~2-1/2" tall (item alone, unmounted) and stands about 4-1/2" tall mounted on the included museum-quality display mount. The figural brownware pottery form depicts that of a bat, with outstretched wings and prominently displayed male genitalia. Because the lower portion of the figure is human-like, this may represent a deity or human shaman in transformation. The wings exhibit elaborate designs, featuring scroll-like symbols of undetermined cultural meaning. The whistle function works, emitting a loud, high-pitched tone that complements the figural subject (bat). The figure can easily be removed from the custom mount for study. Provenance: Former C. Thomas, Florida, USA private collection. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. #101708
