Description:

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Paracas, ca. 700 to 500 BCE. A shallow pottery dish or plaque adorned with a centrally incised composite zoomorph in profile, painted with red and white highlights on a black-brown ground with red rim and a double incised border just beneath. Ceramics were a significant form of visual culture created by the Paracas artisans. Usually their vessels were actually decorated after the firing process with resin-based colors, but here the rich textural red and orange slips that contrast so nicely with the smooth, grey ground as well as the painstakingly incised details were created prior to the firing process. A rare example from this very early Peruvian culture, with nice burnishing marks and firing clouds that add to the charm of the piece as well. Size: 5.375" in diameter (13.7 cm)
