Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. Two bichrome terracotta figures of the traditional sheepface form, a seated male and a standing female, both with visages comprised of an extremely pointed and protruding nose, recessed ovoid eyes, pointed/hornlike ears, and a tall banded headdress with applied, incised, and painted details. Both are also bedecked with large ear ornaments (the female's around a perforated central opening), multistrand beaded necklaces with elaborate pendant drops, white gloves and foot coverings, the female with a painted lower garment, all in white on a red ground. Size: female measures 9.25" H (23.5 cm); male measures 8.75" H (22.2 cm)

Provenance: private Stagecoach, Nevada, USA collection; acquired from 1985 to present from galleries such as Arte Primitivo, Art For Eternity, Butterfields, and Riverbend Gallery

  • Condition: Expected surface wear commensurate with age with pigment loss and slight abraded areas. Loss to tip of female's nose. Male's headdress reattached. Nice scattered manganese deposits on both figures, with liberal deposits on the male.
