Description:

Eastern Europe / Anatolia, Balkan region, Neolithic Period, Vinca culture, ca. 5700 to 4500 BCE. An exceptionally rare steatite stone disc featuring linear markings or script on one side, and a starburst or sun motif surrounding the circular piercing on the other side. The Vinca symbols, often found on pottery, figurines, and tablets, are considered one of the earliest forms of proto-writing, though their exact meaning remains unknown. Some researchers suggest they may represent a rudimentary script or symbolic communication. This piece may have functioned as a spindle whorl, a small, often decorated stone or clay disc used to add weight and control to a spindle while spinning fibers into thread.
