Description:

Ancient Near East, Jemdet Nasr (Iraq), ca. 3100 to 2900 BCE. A large cylinder seal, carved using drilling and string cutting from a piece of creamy, pale brown, slightly translucent quartzite, pierced vertically for suspension. The surface has a repeated pattern of sunken dots inside of diamonds, perhaps meant to suggest eyes. Jemdet Nasr, in ancient southern Mesopotamia (modern central Iraq), is a tell site consisting of two mounds, one of which was occupied by a large mudbrick building during the earliest occupation of the site, when this seal was made. This period is famous for its early, proto-cuneiform tablets. Size: 2.1" H (5.3 cm)
