North America, Upper Great Lakes/Illinois River Valley/Ohio River Valley, Red Ocher people, Terminal Archaic to Early Woodland Period, ca. 1000 BCE to 400 BCE. A rare, beautifully shaped black and olive green banded slate bar amulet. The base is flat, while the upper side has two raised ends and raised center with shallow valleys between them. Bar amulets like this one are known from mound burials in Red Ocher sites throughout the upper American Midwest. Inside these burials, banded slate amulets lay alongside bifaces, projectile points, and copper beads. Size: 7" L x 1" W (17.8 cm x 2.5 cm)
