Description:

North American, found in Ohio, USA, Mississippian, Later Woodland Culture, ca. 500 to 800 CE. Made from a banded dark and light grey granitic stone, this is a nice example of an uncupped boatstone, a stone item that was probably used to weight an atlatl and increase its efficiency - although their exact use is unknown. The weight is so named for its boat-like shape (and others are cupped, with a scooped out underside, giving it an even more boat-like profile). If indeed they were used to weight atlatls, they would have been tied between the handle and the hook end where the dart or spear was placed. Size: 14.25" W x 1.1" H (36.2 cm x 2.8 cm)

Provenance: private Newport Beach, California, USA collection
