Description:

Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Narino culture, ca. 850 to 1500 CE. A fascinating pottery vessel boasting the unique form of a hemispherical bowl supported by 3 anthropomorphic figures who stand atop a ring-shaped base. The exterior of the bowl is adorned with negative resist designs of steppe and maze motifs as the figures stand below with legs and arms spread and heads tilted upwards. This vessel may have been used for holding coca, the ubiquitous leaf chewed in Narino society - and many others in South America - to provide stimulation. A rare and remarkable example! Size: 5.4" Diameter x 3.6" H (13.7 cm x 9.1 cm)

Provenance: private Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA collection, via descent from a Winnipeg, Canada collection, acquired in Ecuador circa the 1960s
