Description:

Native American, Southeastern United States, Mississippian culture, ca. 11th to 14th century CE. A fascinating grayware pottery bowl featuring hand appliques on the interior of the basin, just below the incised rim. Open palm motifs are commonly found in Mississippian pottery, often associated with the hand-and-eye symbol. While the full meaning of these motifs remains unknown, researchers suggest they may represent a hand-shaped constellation symbolizing a cosmological portal to the afterlife. Additionally, the spacing of the hands might correspond to the four cardinal directions. Size: 14" Diameter x 3.25" H (35.6 cm x 8.3 cm)
