Description:

Pre-Columbian, southern Mexico/northern Central America, Maya Territories, ca. 200 to 900 CE. A mold-made pottery whistle in the form of a standing primate wearing a necklace or some kind of collar; its stomach is distended, like the animal ate a drum. The arms and legs seem rough, but the face and neck are detailed. Four species of monkeys lived in the Maya region in pre-Columbian times: two howler monkeys, the spider monkey, and the capuchin. These animals fascinated the Maya and are common subjects of their artwork, often depicted carrying valuable goods like cacao. Whistles in the form of animals were commonly placed in Maya graves, perhaps to help guide the dead to the underworld, Xibalba. Comes with custom stand. Size: 1.9" W x 5.1" H (4.8 cm x 13 cm)
