Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mayan Empire, El Salvador, ca. 550 to 900 CE. We have seen several dozen Mayan "swimmer" bowls, but can count on one hand the number of "swimmer" plates. Lovely large tripod in traditional Copador coloration and decoration with 4 swimmers along inner rim and geometric patterns in center. Exterior decorated with red rim and orange wide stripe. Some Mayanologists have suggested Swimmers represent the Mayan Hero Twins as they are normally shown in groups of 2, but this plate may point to an entirely different possibility. Size: 10" L x 3" H (25.4 cm x 7.6 cm)

Provenance: Ex-private D. Moreno collection, Florida acquired in the early 1980's.
