Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Jaina Island, Maya, ca. 600 to 900 CE. A Classic Period Maya rattle figure in the form of a standing female figure with raised hands from Jaina Island on the gulf cost of Campeche, Mexico. Mold-made and adorned with elaborate regalia including an impressive headdress, earspools, a beaded necklace with a large drop pendant, ankle bracelets, and a tunic or poncho wrapped by a wide belt, the figure is comprised of buff terracotta with some white stucco still remaining on the surface. Within are several rattle balls that create a fabulous percussive sound. Similar examples may be found in the book entitled, "Hidden Faces of the Maya" by Linda Schele.
